Custom Cluster Layout

Pro

Compose Group Shape + Shape + heuristic into a saved preset.

Custom Cluster Layout lets Pro users compose a reusable cluster recipe from one Group Shape, one Shape, and one Clustering Heuristic. The dialog also stores the preset name, sort order, spacing, neutral threshold, and per-preset label colors in app settings.

How to get there

Toolbar

Layout dropdown -> Custom Cluster Layout...

Menu

Board template picker -> "Cluster: Custom"

Template cards can start from a custom-cluster layout mode.

Build a preset

Open the Custom Cluster Layout dialog, pick exactly one Group Shape, one Shape, and one Clustering Heuristic, then apply the preset. Group Shape controls how finished cluster blocks are arranged; Shape controls how items pack inside each cluster; Clustering Heuristic decides which bucket each item belongs to.

  • Cluster Name is optional; leaving it blank uses the generated compact name for the selected shapes and heuristic.
  • Label Colors can override the global cluster label text and background colors for this preset.
  • Cluster Order chooses Sort Ascending or Sort Descending for bucket order.
  • Neutral is only active for Color Hue low-saturation items and Sort by Name non-alpha items.

Dialog controls

The window title is "Custom Cluster Layout". Each selector enforces one active choice in its group, so a saved preset always has a complete shape + heuristic recipe.

ControlWhat it doesSource detail
Cluster NamePro
Sets the display name for the saved custom cluster layout. The dialog generates a compact name from Group Shape, Shape, and Clustering Heuristic, but typed text is saved as the preset display name.
Group ShapePro
Chooses how completed cluster blocks are placed relative to each other.Available labels: Masonry Rows, Masonry Columns, Masonry Screen Space, Radial, Grid. The saved Group Shape is normalized before layout and before app-settings persistence.
Vertical groupsPro
Stacks cluster groups top-to-bottom instead of using the normal group flow. This toggle belongs to Group Shape and is passed through the custom layout preset as VerticalGroups.
ShapePro
Chooses how items are packed inside each cluster.Available labels: Masonry Rows, Masonry Columns, Masonry Screen Space, Radial, Grid. Shape spacing is independent from Group Shape spacing.
Clustering HeuristicPro
Chooses the item property or analysis signal used to split the board into clusters.Available labels: Folder Path, Sort by Name, Extension, Date Created, Date Modified, File Size, Dimension Width, Dimension Height, DPI, Color Hue, Brightness, Entropy, Duration (Audio/Video), Audio Loudness, Audio Dynamic Range, PBR, Normal, Geo Location, Star Rating. Some labels map to built-in modes; Normal is handled as a custom heuristic without a separate built-in dropdown mode.
Group SpacingPro
Sets the space between finished cluster blocks. The Group Shape Spacing slider has minimum 0, maximum 5000, tick frequency 1, and displays 8 by default.
Shape SpacingPro
Sets the space between items inside each cluster. The Shape Spacing slider has minimum 0, maximum 5000, tick frequency 1, and displays 8 by default.
Cluster OrderPro
Controls bucket ordering with Sort Ascending or Sort Descending. The dialog keeps one of Sort Ascending or Sort Descending selected and stores the result as the preset sort direction.
NeutralPro
Controls how aggressively eligible items are absorbed into a neutral cluster. The slider ranges from 0 to 0.5, ticks by 0.01, and displays 0.18 by default. Its tooltip scopes it to Color Hue low-saturation items and Sort by Name non-alpha items.
Label ColorsPro
Overrides cluster label Text and Background colors for the preset.Text accepts a hex label text color; Background accepts a hex color with alpha. Leaving either blank falls back to global label colors.

Custom Cluster Layout is Pro-gated. Saved presets and custom-cluster settings persist through AppSettings (CustomClusterLayouts plus the legacy CustomClusterDisplayName/custom shape/heuristic fields), and those presets can be selected again or rebuilt after relayout.
